Java Troubleshooting
Desktop Sharing and Screenshot functions in Vyew require Java 1.6 (aka 6.0) to be installed into your browser. It is easy, free and takes about 1 minute to install.
To Install or Upgrade Java
- If you have an old version of Java installed
- Un-installed it (See “Java Version Conflicts” below)
- Not sure if what version you have installed? See “Browser Test Page“.
- Goto www.java.com
- Click “Free Java Download” button.
What Java Version Do I have?
- Vyew Desktop Sharing and Screen Shot tool requires Java 1.6 (aka 6.0).
- Check your version here: http://vyew.com/browsertest
Java Version Confusion: The geniuses in the Sun marketing department decided to rename product versions at the expense of complete confusion. So for the record, Java 6.0 = Java 1.6, and Java 5.0 = Java 1.5.
Java Version Conflicts
If you have multiple Java versions installed, most likely our Desktop Sharing applet will not work. Even if you think you have only one version of Java, there may be an old one lurking in your computer. Here’s how to check if you have multiple versions (and get rid of old ones):
- Go to START > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (in Windows). This will list all of your programs. You will see something like “Java(TM) 6 update 17″. Uninstall all but the newest one. (Don’t worry, if you need the old versions, you can reinstall them here).
- Don’t celebrate yet, you probably still have the old Java files on your computer. But your computer doesn’t realize it. Check C:\Program Files\Java (in Windows). There you will see the folders that hold all of the Java Files. You should have one or two, but you may very well see three or four. You should have jre6 or jre1.6.0_<version> or both. Anything more and you have multiple version of Java. To get rid of them, just delete the folders that aren’t jre6 and the latest jre1.6.0_<version>. If you still want the old versions, create another folder, like old_java_versions, and put them in there. Because that’s not the name of a java version, it won’t be considered a java version and our desktop sharing program will think you only have one version of Java.
If all else fails, repeat steps 1 and 2 and uninstall and delete all of your Java versions, restart your computer, and
But it shouldn’t come to that point.
Accepting the Java Security Notice
During your first run of either Desktop Sharing or Screenshot, you will see a Java Security Notice, which will ask you if you want to run the Vyew Applet. Click Run or OK, to continue. If you do not accept this notice the Vyew features will not work. You will need to refresh your browser and try again.
Still doesn’t work?
- Try using the Mozilla Firefox browser if you’re not already.

- Each step you took
- Any exact error messages you got
- What your browser version and operating system are

Introduction to Sharing your Desktop
Overview
Vyew’s Desktop Sharing allows users to broadcast their screen to anyone in their Vyew Meeting. They will see your mouse move, and any windows which are visible to you, will be visible to them. Windows which are minimized or in the background will not be accessable to them. Also, people viewing your screen will not be allowed to control your computer. View does not allow remote control. If you are using Vyew’s push-to-talk VOIP, or teleconferencing option, you can continue to use this while desktop sharing.
Getting Started
Once inside a VyewBook, click on the Desktop Sharing tab to begin sharing everything on your screen.

Vyew will then load a Java applet which will begin sharing your screen. (See here for troubleshooting Java).
Once your screen is sharing, you can minimize Vyew and navigate to any programs or websites you wish to show your viewers.
When you navigate to a new window, it will take 2-4 seconds for your screen to show up on your viewers screen, so take this into account when speaking about a new screen that came up. Pause 3 or 4 seconds after screen changes so that your followers screens can catch up. Since some users with different screen resolutions than you may zoom in, move your mouse slower than normal so that their auto-panning will not be erratic.
Switching Presenters
In Vyew, any user who is a Collaborator, Moderator or Owner can share his/her desktop (More about user roles). You can allow them to share his/her desktop by stopping your sharing, and advising them to click the “Start Sharing My Desktop” button which they will see on their screen (when in the Desktop Sharing tab).
