It appears that my vyewbook presentations, when published and embedded on my site, only play back the whiteboard, with no audio nor webcam image of the presenter. Am I doing something wrong, or is this how it is supposed to work.

What are you using to record?
The VyewBook publishing option does not record anything, it simply outputs a snapshot version of your VyewBook so it can be embedded in a web page.

If you want full audio/video recording there are 2 options ::

You can try using our Vyew Accelerator (which is a pre-release alpha version, not completely tested):

or you can use a third party software such as camstudio.org
