desktop sharing slow

Hey.
Been looking at this software for a few days/weeks now...it looks pretty good, but desktop sharing is slow to refresh on the participant page.  Also, the minimize/maximize thing is a little wacky.  I’m wondering if rather than minimize, it may be better to get a window set up with some options--we can click there to draw on the screen, for example, and end the sharing session.

Also, any thoughts about the speed issue?  I ahve not tried it for a real conference, but as I sit here between my two computers, I can see that if I were to demo an application to someone on the other end I’d have to keep asking her “did it load yet”?
I like most of the other features--but others (e.g. gotomeeting) do a better job of desktop sharing.
Am I missing something?

Yes, desktop share is slow. Since you do not have to download and application, we have a limit as to what can be done using Java.  Of course, this is still version 1 of desktop share.  We think that then next version could improve speed to 25% or 30%.  But still, it was never intended to be as fast as an installed application.  So if you need to desktop share video or something like that, you may want to look elsewhere.

As for the min/max of the browser, we have been thinking about that too.  One thought is to expose a control that lets the user decided what happens to the browser window. I do not expect that anytime soon though because we have a list of things we have to get done by Dec, so we are plenty busy. :)

Still, comment noted and agreed with.

So we should expect a release in december?)
BTW, by “slow” I mean it can be up to 10-20 seconds behind.

well, 10 to 20 seconds is too slow.  Normally we get around 3 to 7 seconds.

Things that could be slowing it down are a slow computer, or a slow upload speed. Try it on other systems and tell me what you see.  I was just using it last night and I was getting around 2 to 3 sec, but the computer was pretty fast as well as the upload speed.

10-20 seconds is on the high side.  I’ve been comparing it while running a clock from time.gov parallel, and tried to load the system using other flash or ajax apps.  Still, though, (opinion alert!) 3-7 secs is a bit slow to try and demo a web application.  I’ll keep playing to see what happens.

thanks!

Hopefully with the changes we have in mind, we can make it faster, but hey, for no download, and working on Mac and soon linux?  Thats not too bad. :)

Once thing you can do to make it faster is try to make the desktop updates as small as possible by making the active application window small.

Good luck.

I just began using Vyew and am impressed by the functionality, but am equally dismayed by the slow refresh rate during desktop sharing.  As I sit with my 2 (new) computers connected over a cable internet connection, I am getting refresh rates of 10-15 seconds on the participant machine, and sometimes more, but never less that 5-6 seconds, depending on the action.  Cursor movements are pretty fast, but page refreshes are too slow for practicle Web demo purposes (the reason I’m looking into Vyew).

I noticed that this thread is from 2006 and there were aspirations of making the refresh rate faster.  This leaves me wondering if there is something I can do on my end to improve this.  Making the demoed Web pages smaller helps only minimally.

Thanks.

Greg,
10 seconds is slow. Normal rate should be about 5-8 seconds.
It could be that the traffic somewhere along the line between you and our servers is being bogged down, due
to time of day, or something.
Im not sure what to suggest, sine we dont have this complaint often.

We do have an installable version of the screen sharing tool that may speed things up:

And here is a “best practices” document on desktop sharing:
