Vyew Outage – Explanation

We deeply apologize for the outage last week. In the 9 year history of Vyew we have never had such a long outage.

The technical reason for the problem is that in our database of pages, the variable type for the ID numbers was short-sightedly set to an 11-byte signed integer which has a maximum number range of 2.1 Billion.

On Jan 21st, we reached our limit of 2.1 Billion pages.

We fixed this by expanding the variable type. But by the time we saw the issue, much damage had been done and pages were overwriting eachother.

We have reverted everyones rooms to the previous state of this issue, and hope Vyew will run smoothly now.

Thank you for your understanding.

Changes underway at Vyew, your favorite visual workspace

We want to thank you for growing with us. Occasionally, we reach out to our users and inform them of key updates and new features.

Come this August we will transition from a free “beta” service to a paid service. This marks a milestone of the application and our business. For the past 8 years, Vyew has been the only full-featured web conferencing provider that has offered a completely free service.

Sustainable Vyew

Like all good things, the free version is coming to an end. In order to continue providing this service, we must find a balance to our sustainable business model. If you have been using Vyew free of charge and getting value out of it, why not help support us? We will continue to grow and maintain the service.  Next month we plan to release our much-anticipated iOS app for your iPhone and iPad.  If you are already a paying customer, we thank you, and your pricing will remain the same.

On August 25th of this year, we will phase out our free user accounts. In it’s place we will offer a $.99 trial for 30 days for new users. You as an existing user of Vyew, you will have to convert to a paid account before that date.

We will offer 3 paid user accounts:
• Our single user Plus account will be $9.95 USD a month. This is a limited feature account butsuits the basic needs of many users.
• Our single-user Pro account will be $29.95 USD a month and have all the features Vyew has now, plus new features we are adding (such as iOS integration) as we move to being a paid service
• Our 5-user Team accounts will be $99 USD a month for every 5 users. Team accounts have all the features our Pro accounts but with bulk pricing discounts.

Special Offer

Act now and save. If you subscribe for 1 year or more …save well over 65%. We make this offer as a thank you for your loyalty to Vyew.

We look forward to making Vyew even better.

So what do I get with this new pricing model besides access to the features I am used to?

New features
• Upgraded PDF rendering of your room
• Wolfram search and related calculators
• Checklist and procedures with our “Get It Done” framework
• early beta access to our iPhone and iPad apps

What will happen to my free account?

We deeply apologize, but we can no longer afford to provide free accounts. If you opt out, on August 26th your account will be frozen. If you don’t choose to upgrade by September 26th, then your room content will be removed.

What if I’m already a paying customer?

We appreciate your support and your current pricing will remain the same. All monthly and yearly accounts will renew at their same price level.

Who uses Vyew?

We have discovered that there are four types of users:
• Tutors and teachers, especially in language arts and math
• Coaches, consultants, and training, especially for blended on-site and online whiteboard discussion
• Business managers, especially those involved in international account sales and service
• Small business owners and their virtual assistants, especially those involved in visual design and trade promotions

What is a Persistent Workspace? Is that the same as a room?

Yes it is. We are working on changing that phrasing wherever else it exists on the site. A persistent workspace and a room are the same thing.

You said there would be a big change on the September 8th, 2014  and nothing seems to have happened. When is the big change over?

We delayed the change over to September 25th, 2014. There were some technical issues on our end and confusion about how all the use cases would work from our users that remained.

So what is happening with my existing accounts after the 25th of September?

  • What happens if I choose not to upgrade to being a Plus, Pro or Team account by September 25th, 2014

  • If you have not become either a Plus, Pro or Team account after September 25th 2014, all your rooms and their content as of that date will be archived. It is recoverable. That will be explained shortly.

  • You will become a Free User once you login. You will be taken to the Upgrade page to have you decide if you wish to become a Plus, Pro or Team account user. If you do, all previous rooms, their content and invitations will be restored automatically by the system.

  • IF you had more rooms than the plan you subscribed to allows, you still will get all your previous rooms back. If you want to add rooms to your account at that point, the system will direct you to upgrade to the plan that will allow the expansion.

    • Example. I had 15 rooms before the 25th of September.  I signed up for a Plus account on September 29th. The system will re-instate my previous rooms. I can do whatever I want with those 15 rooms. I want to add a new room. The system will direct me to the upgrade page so I can become a Pro user.

  • If you choose not to upgrade, then you may continue by hitting a button named NOT AT THIS TIME.

  • You will be asked to fill out a brief profile section and then your first room will be generated. It is what we call a Getting Started room. There is some predefined content and help information on the first page in the Getting Started room.  You may remove all the content on the first page of the Getting Started room if you wish. You may also add additional pages to your Getting Started room. You can name it whatever you wish to name it (within the guideline of our Terms of Service). You can also start a second room and have full privileges with this room as well as your first (initially called Getting Started) room.

  • The next two times you login to Vyew, you will be taken to the Upgrade Page. You may hit the NOT AT THIS TIME button and the system will take to your Free Account. After your first three logins, the system will take you directly to your Free Account. If you choose to upgrade to a Plus, Pro or Team member of Vyew, your previous rooms, their content and all invitations will be restored automatically by the system.

What about invitations I had received or sent before September 25th, 2014?

Any invitations you have extended to others, paid users or non-paying (free) users, to join your rooms generated before September 25th, 2014 will be disabled.
Any existing invitations to rooms from other free users will also be disabled.
You will be able to use any invitation from any paid user of Vyew. It does not matter if the invitation was sent before or after September 25th, 2014. You will be able to see and use their rooms on your account in addition to the two free rooms you will be able to have as a free user.

Can I still upgrade after my first three logins after September 25th, 2014?

You can revive your previous rooms from archived status by signing back in and upgrading to being a Plus, Pro or Team account. The system will do that automatically.
All your invitations that you have sent to others will be restored.
Any invitations you receive from any Free User of Vyew that joined before September 25th, 2014 will remain disabled. They can be made active one the owner of the invitation becomes a Plus, Pro or Team user of Vyew.

How long do I have until my content is deleted permanently?

If you do not upgrade by December 25th, 2014, your rooms, their content  and invitations to your rooms will be deleted by the system. It will be unrecoverable at that point.

For brand new users to Vyew after September 25th:

  • You may choose either a trial account for .99, a Plus account for $9.95 a month or a Pro account for $29.95.

    • The trial account will have all the features of a Plus account.  You will get messages before your trial is over telling you that you will lose access to the service soon and need to upgrade. The system will not charge you .99 a second time. You will either need to upgrade to a Plus or Pro account or your account will be archived. You can revive your account from archived status by signing back in and upgrading to being a Plus or Pro account.  If you do not upgrade within 90 days, your content will be deleted.

  • If you choose to be a Plus or Pro member of Vyew, you can either agree to pay monthly or annually. You can also pay for a subscription to Vyew monthly and convert later to paying for 1 or 2 years in advance. Your 1 year or two year subscription period starts when you upgrade. There are substantial discounts for signing up for either one year or 2 years rather than paying monthly.

  • If you wish to be a free user, someone who has a paid account has to invite you to join a Vyew room. You will be asked to fill out a brief profile section and then your first room will be generated. It is what we call a Getting Started room. There is some predefined content and help information in the Getting Started room.  You may remove all the content on the first page of the Getting Started room if you wish. You may also add additional pages to your Getting Started room. You can name it whatever you wish to name it. You can also start a second room and have full privileges with this room and your first (initially called getting Started) room. If you wish to add a third room, the system will take you to the upgrade page to have you become a Plus or Pro user.

So what about free accounts?

We definitely heard the feedback on free accounts. We have to balance the needs of our users with our ability to generate enough income to keep the service open. Please see the section on What is happening to existing accounts after the 25th of September, 2014 or What is happening to new users who join after the 25th of September, 2014 for details on free accounts.

Can you raise the number of rooms for Plus users from 5 to 10 rooms at no charge please? 5 rooms isn’t enough!

We heard you loud and clear on this issue and have enabled all Plus accounts to have 10 rooms.

What if I want more than 10 rooms but don’t want to be a Pro user?

You can buy 5 room packs for $5 a month by going to the Upgrade page

Is PDF Export part of being a Plus User?

Yes, we have made change and have updated the Upgrade page to reflect that.

Can I pay by Paypal?

Yes. You can use paypal if you become a Plus, Pro or Team user and agree to pay for at least one year in advance. You can also pay by Paypal if you want to pay for two years in advance.  Contact us directly to set this up.

Can I use Paypal and just pay monthly?

Not at this time. When it becomes available, we will announce via email as well as when you login in.

Why Advertising?

We’ve recently introduced a new advertising bar for free accounts. This will enable Vyew to keep the service free. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please upgrade to a basic “plus” plan to remove ads.

Email Aliases – How to link multiple email addresses to one Vyew account

If you have multiple email addresses, it is convenient to link them all together in the Vyew system. If someone invites you to a room and send the invite to either of your addresses, they can all be accessed by one Vyew account.  For this purpose we allow you to create multiple Email Aliases for your main Vyew account.

I may have three different email addresses: tim@gmail.com, tim@company.com, and tim@yahoo.com.  I use tim@company.com to login to my Vyew account. My colleagues may have all three of those emails in their address book. When they go to invite me to a Vyew Room, they may invite tim@gmail.com. When this happens an unregistered guest account for tim@gmail.com is created. When I enter that room I will come in as tim@gmail.com, not as tim@company.com (which is my main login).

To solve this problem I will create two Email Aliases (tim@gmail.com, tim@yahoo.com) linked to my main Vyew login (tim@company.com).

How to create an Email Alias

  1. Go to the Email Alias Manager
  2. You may be prompted to login. Make sure you are logged in as your main Vyew login address.
  3. Add your other email addresses with the form
  4. A confirmation email will go out and you must click the link in the email to complete the process.

If I have two registered Vyew accounts already, how do I merge and link them together?

If the email alias you would like to create already exists as a registered account, then all the data and rooms will be merged over to the main account. For example, if my main account is tim@company.com, and I create an alias called tim@gmail.com, then any rooms owned by tim@gmail.com will be then transferred to tim@company.com.

Known Issue — Medias in Room not editable

There is a major bug which we are working on and will release an emergency fix immediately (by today, Thurs, May 3rd). The issue is that a large number of media object (image, document, etc) inside a room are not editable or movable. No data is lost, it is just no editable. We greatly apologize for this huge inconvenience and are working hard to get this fixed ASAP.

Techincal Details

The reason this is happening is because our database reached a limit on the ID numbers for media objects. We are changing the datatype to account for more media objects and are testing the fix right now. We hope to release sometime during the day today, Thursday, May 3rd.
